Project:
Through the Climate Preparedness and Adaptation Strategy, the Ministry of Energy and Climate Solution’s Climate Action Secretariat (CAS), in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Child Care is committed to working with local communities and youth to learn more about, prepare for, and adapt to climate change in British Columbia.
In response to requests from B.C. teachers to support climate change education in our province, CAS is asking to work with teachers to create a grade 4–8 teaching resource. This resource will support climate change education by creating learning resources which include local, place-based instructional examples, and reflections by B.C. teachers. This work will build on a resource for K–3 teachers that is expected to be released later this year.
Commitment
The first phase of this project will involve two virtual focus group sessions of two hours each, and two hours of additional work between sessions, outside of teaching hours, for a total of 6 hours of commitment. Virtual focus group dates and times are as follows—participants are expected to attend both sessions via video call:
- Thursday, February 27, 2025: 4:30-6:30 pm PST
- Thursday, March 6, 2025: 4:30-6:30 pm PST
Future phases of this project will involve addition opportunities for co-development work, potentially including the development of climate change-themed learning stories and resource contributions and/or review.
Compensation
Teacher participants will be remunerated by the Ministry of Energy and Climate Solutions for their time, including virtual meetings and time spent reviewing materials outside of meetings. The Ministry of Energy and Climate Solutions will remunerate each teacher directly at a rate of $325 per seven-hour day. As the total time commitment for the first phase of this project is six hours outside of teaching contract hours, this will come to $278.57 for each BCTF member. Future phases of this project may include additional work up to 25 hours.
Teachers’ ideas and contributions may be included in CAS’s 4-8 Climate Change Connections in the B.C. Curriculum guide, which will be shared with B.C. teachers as a free supporting teaching resource.
