Professional Development Days
At various times during the year, school is in session for teachers but not for students. These days are devoted to teacher professional development, or Pro-D.
The scheduling of Pro-D days does not mean a loss of instructional time for students, as these days were added to the school calendar. The inclusion of Pro-D days in the school calendar increased the number of days of work for teachers with no loss of
instructional days for students.
Education in BC and around the world is continually changing, so it is important for teachers to keep on top of new research and education policies that affect their work with students. Although classes are not in session on professional development days,
teachers use this time to work with colleagues to further their skills and engage in a broad range of professional development activities, such as attending a provincial conference, a locally-based workshop, or a school-based discussion group. Teachers
value the opportunity to work with their peers and to enhance their practice in ways that will, in turn, benefit the students in their classes.
The October Pro-D day is governed by the following procedure from the BCTF Members’ Guide:
30.A.14—That for the purpose of a province-wide PSA day, the BCTF supports the third Friday in October as the day on which all districts hold a professional day, except in years in which Thanksgiving Monday falls in the same week, in which case the fourth
Friday would be the designated day. (Jan 96 Ex, p. 2)
