What to do about health and safety concerns in schools

This week has been a real challenge for everyone as schools reopened to more students. The BCTF and our locals continue to work extremely hard to ensure health and safety is the top priority and that teacher workload is balanced. We recognize how hard you are working to do your best for students in a very difficult situation. Thank you. The BCTF and your local union are here for you. The districts all must adhere to Ministry-approved health and safety plans. In addition, your union is represented on a Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee that has an important oversight role. Please report any health and safety concerns to your staff representative, local union, or health and safety officer to ensure those concerns are known and can be addressed.

BC teachers stand together against racism and police brutality

The British Columbia Teachers’ Federation denounces the violence we have all witnessed against Black community members. We stand in solidarity with all those demanding an end to these egregious human rights violations and the white supremacy they reflect in our country and around the world. Read the Federation’s full statement here.

Resources to help teach antiracism strategies

The BCTF Committee for Action on Social Justice has series of lesson plans and resources to help teachers address racism and also teach strategies to help eliminate racism from our schools and communities. The Federation’s resource-sharing site TeachBC also has many lesson plans and activities for teachers to incorporate into their antiracism teaching.
