Now, knowledge of the land, and the ability to communicate location with other interest groups, demands an understanding of maps, their limitations, and the mapping technology available. Such information is critical for land use management decisions. This activity introduces students to maps, scale, and identifying their personal landmarks on topographical maps. This unit can be used to help students achieve the following Prescribed Learning Outcomes for Mathematics 8: A5 solve problems that involve rates, ratios, and proportional reasoning; C1 develop and apply the Pythagorean theorem to solve problems.
