iMinds Learning Resources from the Centre for Addictions Research of BC/University of Victoria iMinds is a drug-related health literacy program for grades 6-10. Each module features six easy-to implement lessons that meet numerous Prescribed Learning Outcomes and help students develop the knowledge and skills they need to survive and thrive in our world. All materials are downloadable free of charge and related professional learning opportunities are available through the Centre for Addictions Research of BC/University of Victoria.

Ongoing Opportunities

ACT - Autism Community Training (formerly ACT BC) offers a variety of workshops to professionals and families supporting children and adults with autism spectrum disorder. ACT has a growing slate of webcasts -- videotaped live workshops -- delivered via the ACT web site. ACT webcasts contain all the content of one of our live events, and are available to subscribers 24/7 anywhere that has a high-speed internet connection. Each may be viewed as many times as a subscriber likes for a defined subscription period. Please check out the ACT web site for workshop and webcast details.

Inclusion Network - Training, Consulting and Networking Facilitators whose aim is to foster the development of inclusion.

Partners in Teaching program
This initiative from the BC Epilepsy Society includes free educational workshops and materials about seizures, first aid, and the related school issues for school staff or students. The goal of this program is to create safe and supportive classrooms for any student who may experience seizures. For more information, individuals can call BC Epilepsy at 604-875-6704, or email them at outreach@bcepilepsy.com.

Rick Hansen School Program 
The Rick Hansen School Program offers workshops about its resources for Professional Development days around Metro Vancouver. School Program resources are designed to educate students about the potential of people with disabilities and inspire students to make a difference in their community. Resources are available for both elementary and secondary classrooms. Workshops will be catered to specific resources, either for Kindergarten to Grade 7 teachers, or for teachers of Grades 8-12. All of the RHSP materials are available for free download online at www.rickhansen.com/schools.

Online PD linked to Inclusive Education

ChildTrauma Academy is a not-for-profit organization based in Houston, Texas. The mission of the Academy is to help improve the lives of traumatized and maltreated children and their families. We do so by working to improve the systems that educate, nurture, protect and enrich these children.

The Provincial Outreach Program for FASD (POPFASD) will be offering a FREE 6 week course to BC Educators this fall, delivered online using Elluminate technology.
This introductory level training is available to all BC educators(teachers, EAs and administrators) and provides a foundation for increasing understanding of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder and its educational implications. With an increased level of understanding, educators will be able to provide more effective and appropriate supports for learners with FASD.
For anyone who has already completed the SSEAC Training, this course will be duplicate information.

Special Education certificate online 
Online offering of the Special Education certificate from the University of Saskatchewan Department of Psychology and Special Education - 30 credit units.
Pre-requisites: BEd degree, professional teaching certificate, minimum of one year teaching, six credit units of undergraduate courses in Special Education.

SNOW - Special Needs Opportunity Windows (Ontario) 
Cultivating the Inclusive Education Community. SNOW is an Education Service of The Adaptive Technology Resource Centre.

UWillTeach.com (formerly TeachSpecialEd.com) is an Internet-based program developed for use as a part of special education certification, as well as for ongoing professional development. It is designed for those who are preparing to teach or are currently teaching students with mild and moderate disabilities.
It offers two enrollment options: a comprehensive ten course curriculum or individual courses.
Courses include: Foundations in Special Education, Development and Characteristics of Learners with Exceptional Learning Needs, Assessment for Instructional Planning and Decision Making, Instructional Strategies: Creating Environments that Promote, Learning Appropriate Social Interactions, and Behavior, and much more!

WITS - Teacher Accreditation Program is a free 90 minute online training module for elementary teachers in using the WITS response to peer victimization and bullying. The program was originally developed at Lampson School Elementary in Esquimalt, BC, and has since been expanded through family and police support, as well as community input. WITS stands for Walk away, Ignore, Talk it out and Seek help.

NEW - Certificate in Special Education at the University of Victoria 
This is a professional post-degree program for certified teachers who wish to enhance their ability to accommodate every young person with a specialized learning need within their classroom—every day.

This program offers 7.5 units of coursework (two on-line courses, one summer on-campus course, and one combination course with both on-line delivery and an intensive on-campus component over 3-days during October Pro-D). Courses will cover assessment, remediation, and collaboration and consultation. Participants will acquire the skills necessary to administer Level B assessments, and a strong base of knowledge to assume roles as special educators within schools.

Three units from the Certificate can be laddered into UVic’s Masters in Special Education or all units can be transferred to the Diploma in Special Education (15 units) that will begin in Fall 2010. Visit the web site for more information.

Douglas College offers the Autism Specialty programs (Certificate in Behavioural Intervention )
The citation is the first program of its kind in BC for the training of practitioners who provide one-to-one intensive behavioural intervention based on applied behaviour analysis (ABA).
