The British Columbia Teachers' Federation (BCTF), located on the unceded ancestral territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, sḵwx̱wú7mesh, and səlil̓w̓ətaɬ nations since 1917, is a union of professionals representing over 50,000 public school teachers throughout the province of BC.

The BCTF office building is situated in close proximity to the Canada Line and other major transit routes in a central Vancouver location. The BCTF provides an exceptional working environment for approximately 180 employees where respect, diversity, and professional growth are championed and valued.

This is an in-person position based out of 550 West 6th Avenue, in Vancouver. 

We are seeking an individual who is interested in on-call maintenance work with the BCTF to assist with janitorial services, building, and furniture maintenance.

Examples of janitorial duties include floor cleaning and waxing; vacuuming of carpets and upholstery; dusting and cleaning of furniture, windows, walls, carpets, and upholstery; cleaning, sanitizing, and stocking of washrooms/kitchens; light gardening, pressure washing, leaf blowing, snow removal, and litter pick-up.

Examples of furniture maintenance include minor repairs; shelf installations; assembling, moving, and disassembling furniture and equipment.

Examples of building maintenance duties include painting; small plumbing, carpentry, and tile repairs; wood refinishing; light bulb changes; baseboard installations; door repairs and replacement.

The Casual Shifts to be filled are generally scheduled as follows:

Monday through Friday:

  • Dayshifts: 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • Nightshifts: 5:00 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.

Saturday/Sunday:

  • 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Required education and experience

  • secondary school graduation
  • Building Maintenance Worker Certification is an asset
  • training and/or experience in painting, carpentry, and plumbing
  • minimum of two (2) years’ experience in custodial and/or maintenance work preferably in a building with an automated security system.

Other requirements

  • excellent communication skills
  • ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • ability to respond to emergencies using sound judgement
  • ability to do heavy lifting in a safe manner
  • flexibility and willingness to accept assignments on short notice.
