The BCTF is establishing a formal trust for the governance of the Salary Indemnity Plan. Effective January 1, 2025, the Board of Trustees of the BCTF Salary Indemnity Trust will be responsible for the governance of the plan. Day-to-day administration of the plan will continue to be performed by the BCTF as the plan’s administrative agent.

The BCTF is currently seeking seven members interested in becoming trustees of the BCTF Salary Indemnity Trust, functioning together as the Board of Trustees. Being a trustee is a fiduciary role, with responsibility for governance of the affairs and financials of the trust, to ensure it continues to deliver benefits and serve in its intended purpose.

Candidates should be aware that acting as a trustee is a significant commitment. You must be available to attend a minimum of four regular meetings per year in Vancouver, BC, as well as any additional special meetings, member appeals and/or training sessions. Trustees will also be expected to thoroughly read and review documents in advance of meetings, and continuously advance their knowledge by attending training opportunities.

All voting members of the BCTF and/or members of the Salary Indemnity Plan are eligible to be appointed and/or serve as trustees, with the following exceptions:

  1. BCTF Executive Committee members (during their term as BCTF Executive Committee Member);
  2. Trustees of the Teachers’ Pension Plan (during their term as Teachers’ Pension Plan trustee);
  3. affiliate administrative members of the Plan; and
  4. BCTF staff who are engaged in the administration of the Plan.

The appointment of Trustees will be done by the Executive Committee, following references. The Executive Committee may also meet with candidates in advance.

In establishing the initial Board of Trustees, the Executive Committee will appoint three trustees for five-year terms and the remaining trustees for three-year terms.  After the initial Board of Trustees, all appointments shall be for three-year terms.  Trustee appointments shall commence January 1, 2025 however additional training prior to January 1 is anticipated.

Trustees serve in a voluntary capacity. Accommodations, meals (per diem), leaves of absence (LOA), and necessary travel costs will be provided, in accordance with BCTF policies.
