Seeking up to 24 members who identify as women

3-year terms, from July 1, 2025 to June 30, 2028

The selection of these members will prioritize Indigenous, Aboriginal, Black, racialized, and non-cisgender women as well as women from other equity-seeking identities.

The objectives for the Women in Leadership Development (WIL) program are:

  1. to provide a three-year program of leadership development that emphasizes the critical role of women throughout the union and supports the Federation’s leadership priorities.
  2. to provide training, mentorship, and leadership opportunities in areas that further the WIL members’ active engagement in the Federation, including:
  • attendance at Facilitators’ Institute Training so that WIL members can deliver School Union Representative Training (SURT) workshops.
  • attendance at the Summer Leadership Conference, Federation Leadership Institute, and Bargaining Training.
  • participation in facilitating the Women’s Institute.
  • participation in other Federation and external events as determined by the Federation.

The BCTF is seeking up to 24 teachers who identify as women and who are interested in participating in this three-year program. WIL members will deliver workshops available as part of the BCTF School Union Representative Training (SURT) program. In addition to facilitation, WIL members will develop valuable leadership skills that will help women individually increase their union participation and collectively build supports and networks for leadership in a variety of avenues within the union.

“Teachers teaching teachers” is the foundation of the BCTF workshop program. Those selected as facilitators will receive training in general design/facilitation skills, the Teacher Inquiry framework, and content-specific program areas. Once trained, facilitators are provided with release time, with the BCTF covering Teachers Teaching on Call (TTOC) costs and expenses related to travel, meals, childcare, and accommodation, when needed, to facilitate workshops.

Successful applicants must be available to attend the Facilitators’ Institute Training (FIT) from August 16–18, 2025, at UBC in Vancouver. Members in the program must be available to facilitate workshops throughout the year but especially in the busiest months of September to November. WIL members should be available to facilitate a minimum of three workshops per year. In addition to FIT, the WIL cadre must be available to attend the Federation Leadership Institute (FLI) held each November, to facilitate the BCTF Women’s Institute (usually in February) as well as other Federation events when needed. This role requires people to be critical thinkers who are willing to engage in self-reflection and who are willing to challenge themselves and each other.

If you find professional development engaging, want to develop your leadership skills, believe in service to others, and consider yourself to be a life-long learner who loves to collaborate, you will find this to be a fulfilling and rewarding role.
