Teachers affirm support for the Action Plan

A province wide vote has brought members together in a strong endorsement of the resistance strategy adopted by the AGM. The actions of this government, culminating in the passage of Bill 22 have been nothing more than unabashed attacks on public education and teachers. Teachers have shown their resolve and determination to resist these attacks with 73% voting to support the plan of action. 21,625 voted yes and 7,846 voted no. This decision is the result of careful deliberation and thorough debate.

The strength we gain from a clear, unified decision will be our best protection against, not only the bill, but also the threats this government has had no hesitation in making.

In taking a stand you are supporting an equitable public education system which affords every student the opportunity to develop as an educated citizen and one that values the work of teachers.

We’ve faced many legislative assaults over the decades and have weathered many difficult times together. In the last 11 years alone, there have been 20 bills aimed at teachers and public education. We have survived them all and in the face of what is the worst to assail us so far we need to summon the strength and unity that have served us so well in the past.

More information is available on the extra-curricular component of the plan at https://www.bctf.ca/myBCTF/content.aspx?id=26455&libID=26445 Members are urged to keep up to date with developments by going to the BCTF Member Portal at www.bctf.ca.

Please take the opportunity to discuss the plan with colleagues and engage parents over the reasons for the decision and the effort teachers are making to ensure the survival of a strong public education system.
