PROVINCE-WIDE CHALLENGE:
DROP EVERYTHING AND READ!

For many years, teacher-librarians have organized special school events to mark National School Library Day (NSLD) on the fourth Monday in October. On Monday, October 26th, 2009 the British Columbia Teacher-Librarians' Association is challenging schools, trustees, and members of the legislature to "Drop Everything and Read!" for 20 minutes.  The BCTLA hopes adults across BC will organize their workplaces to “Drop Everything and Read!” on October 26th as well.  In most schools, the event is held between 11:00 and 11:20 a.m., but the timing is not as important as involvement.

Last year, dozens of schools across the province met the challenge on National School Library Day.  Hundreds of BC students engaged in silent reading that day, and the response was terrific. The Vancouver Sun, trustees, MLAs, the Minister of Education and the Premier joined us as well. With your support, we hope to double the participation this year. Please display the enclosed poster prominently, and promote DEAR within and beyond your school. Make sure your PAC hears about the event, and that your LSA sends a copy to your Superintendent, trustees and your mayor. Take lots of pictures to promote the value of reading throughout the year. ( Send us your photos here )

Again this year, the BCTLA has created a Facebook page to allow people to make their reading count.  Go to http://tinyurl.com/ly7uwz to join in all the “Drop Everything and Read!” excitement!

Yours truly,

Karen Lindsay, Vice-President, Advocacy

British Columbia Teacher-Librarians’ Association
