New info on BC’s electoral reform referendum
This fall British Columbians will have an opportunity to decide on how we elect Members of the Legislative Assembly in the future. The electoral reform referendum will take place by mail-in ballot from October 22 to November 30, 2018. It will feature two questions:
- The first will ask British Columbians whether we should adopt a proportional representation voting system or stick with the current first past the post system.
- The second question will ask voters to rank their preferences of three different proportional systems.
The BCTF has adopted a position in favour of change from the first past the post system because we believe it's not fair that a government with only 40% of the vote should get 100% of the power. Here's a short video that illustrates how the last three governments in our province were all majorities, despite winning only a minority of votes.
As Seth Klein of the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives says: “The electoral system we currently use consistently produces results in which the makeup of our legislature does not reflect the will of the people.” In the first of a series of blog posts, Klein asserts that electoral reform is actually quite simple and British Columbians should not be deterred by naysayers who claim it's all too complicated for voters to understand.
