A message from Glen, Teri, and Clint

BCTF FTTOs Glen, Clint, and TeriDear colleagues,

As we come to the end of another school year, we want to thank all of you for your hard work this past year, your strong advocacy for your students, and your love of teaching.

But what a year it has been! With our landmark win in the Supreme Court of Canada, subsequent agreement on implementation, and virtual tie in the provincial election, 2017 will stand as a milestone in our BCTF history.

Because of our advocacy and court victory, we will welcome several thousand more BCTF members into schools and classrooms this September. There will be challenges, especially because the outgoing government has not provided all of the funding required to address all the areas of need in our schools, but we will continue to work hard throughout the summer to ensure our schools get the resources they need to properly implement our restored collective agreement language and to address other needs.

We had hoped to have all issues resolved this spring. Provincially and locally, BCTF representatives and staff have been working hard for a smooth September start up. However, as you know, the outgoing government's stalling and continued underfunding of public education have presented challenges that will need to be resolved in the fall.

This summer could be like no other, which gives us hope. If there is a new government, the BCTF will act quickly to ensure the new minister and cabinet are fully briefed on key issues like funding, curriculum change, recruitment and retention, assessment, and the proper restoration of our working and learning conditions.

Thanks again for everything you do in our schools and communities every day. We hope you all enjoy a wonderful summer with your friends and loved ones.

Glen Hansman, Teri Mooring, Clint Johnston
