Teacher Awards, Grants and Scholarships

The Governor General's Award For Excellence In Teaching Canadian History


The award is funded by Canada's National History Society and is designed to applaud teaching excellence, celebrate Canadian history, recognize the nation's best history educators, and encourage the sharing of great history teaching ideas. It is open to teachers of all levels and entries can be submitted in French and English.

Nature: Twelve finalists are selected. Each receives $500 and a trip to Ottawa for the Award ceremony. The recipient receives a $5,000 honorarium, a medal and a computer for the school.

Criteria for selection include the nominee's demonstration of establishing a stimulating learning environment in the teaching of Canadian history; achieving positive results in student learning and attitudes; and making history relevant to the present and future of the student.

Selection Process:

Candidate needs to compile a submission that illustrates their excellence in teaching Canadian history. Documents should include a completed nomination form, a biography of career highlights, a statement describing the Canadian history content with the course, a one-line description of the submission to be posted on the CNHS Web Page and support materials which may include original lesson plans, samples of student work, letters of recommendation, photos, videos and Web pages.

Deadline Date:

The finalists are chose by a bilingual panel of judges. Selection is based on how well the submission reflects the criteria.

Certificates and the Award will be presented during a ceremony in Ottawa.
