Prime Minister's Awards For Teaching Excellence

Description: The Prime Minister's Awards honour elementary and secondary school teachers across Canada who have best prepared students for the challenges of a changing society and a knowledge-based economy.
Nature: The Awards, offered at the Certificate of Excellence and Certificate of Achievement levels, carry cash prizes of $5000 and $1000 respectively, given to the recipient's school and to be spent under the teacher's direction.

Recipients receive letters and certificates, signed by the Prime Minister, as well as program pins and letterhead.

Certificate of Excellence recipients are honoured at a ceremony in Ottawa with the Prime Minister. Winners spend five days in the nation's capital touring the sites, attending special events and sharing best practices. Certificate of Achievement winners receive their awards at local ceremonies, organized by their schools or school boards. Local Members of Parliament and Ministers participate in many of these ceremonies.
Criteria: Nominees must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents, teach full-time in the classroom at the elementary or secondary level in a Canadian school (part-time teachers or administrators may be nominated provided that they teach the equivalent of 2.5 days a week in a classroom setting or as defined by the provincial guidelines), and must have taught in a Canadian school for at least three years.

Nominators may be any person or group with direct knowledge of the nominee's contribution. Teachers may also nominate themselves.
Selection Process: Award recipients are selected in two stages by regional and national committees comprising representatives from teacher and parent-teacher associations, post-secondary faculties, business, labour, provincial/territorial ministry of education officials and other groups with expertise in education and skills requirements.
Recognition: Certificate of Excellence recipients travel to Ottawa for five days of tours, best practice sessions and a ceremony with the Prime Minister where they receive their award certificate. Cabinet ministers or members of Parliament are invited to participate in local events to honour Certificate of Achievement recipients in their communities.
Deadline Date: The deadline for 2009 nominations is March 31, 2009.
