2017 Restoration of Working and Learning Conditions

Following the Supreme Court of Canada ruling on November 10, 2016, the BCTF met with government and BCPSEA to work out the logistics of the restoration of the provisions that were unconstitutionally stripped from the collective agreement in 2002. On January 5, 2017, agreement was reached that as an interim measure government would immediately provide school districts with $50 million in new funding to create 1,000–1,100 new FTE teaching positions for the balance of the 2016-17 school year. Subsequently, on March 3, 2017,a  tentative agreement was reached to restore and implement, for the 2017-18 school year, all of the substantive collective agreement language that was stripped in 2002 by then Education Minister Christy Clark. The agreement was ratified by BCPSEA and a 98.4% yes vote of teachers on March 10.
