Bargaining Rights

Jim Edmundson, Maureen MacDonald, Geoff Peters 1980

Bargaining Rights song lyricsThis song is a classic “zipper’”song. ‘“Zip” out the original words, and “zip” in the new, topical version. They are a specialty of teachers everywhere and were used widely in all teacher campaigns.

During the Pension campaign, it became increasingly clear to teachers, especially the thousands of new teachers hired when the New Democratic Party formed the government in the early 1970s, that teachers needed the right to bargain all conditions of employment.

This song reflects the need to negotiate on pensions, and all the other issues that teachers wanted to improve, but were specifically prohibited from doing so by BC law.

Melody: Blue Suede Shoes, Carl Perkins, 1955
