Women’s Secretariats and Training Workshops
Many of the initial projects of the BCTF International Solidarity Program had a focus on gender equity in Latin America. These projects supported the creation of women’s secretariats within unions, encouraging networks among union activists, and providing training to support the participation of women in leadership of the union, as well as in schools and society.
The first joint project of the BCTF and CoDevelopment Canada (CoDev) was carried out in Peru in 1986 with SUTEP, the teachers’ union. This program continues, and has had some impact, as demonstrated by more women in leadership.
The BCTF/CoDev partnership expanded, to include teacher unions in Central America, through a regional organization of unions called FOMCA, which continues to co-ordinate the programs.
