Applications are now open for members who identify as women to be part of this important and exciting event. The purpose of the institute, Bread and Roses: Women Creating Community, Inspiring Action, is to:

  • gather feedback from the participants' lived experiences as to the opportunities for, and challenges to, participation in school, local, and community levels.
  • create an opportunity for members who identify as women to share their experiences, build community, and learn new leadership skills and strategies together.
  • support and inspire women's leadership in the workplace, union, and broader community.
  • deepen understanding of women's issues, feminist analyses, intersectionality, and effective collective organizing.
  • celebrate the contributions of women in the union, profession, and the community.

What’s new? What’s next? Teacher magazine looks to the future

teacehrjanfebIn the January/February Teacher magazine we profile the BCTF's largest and growing local - Surrey, we visit a North Vancouver elementary class to visualize schools 100 years from now and celebrate the influx of new, diverse, union members with BCFED President Irene Lanzinger. Delve into solidarity and reconciliation, critique where technology is taking education, and hear rehab stories from two teachers who benefitted from the BCTF Health and Wellness program.

Big thanks to all the staff reps who put the magazine in teachers' mailboxes!

Join the call for universal PharmaCare in Canada

The Canadian Labour Congress has launched a new campaign to push the federal government for a universal PharmaCare plan to reduce ever-increasing drug costs for all Canadians. Watch the moving video about the impact of inadequate drug coverage and find out how you can help at APlanForEveryone.ca.  Later in February, Canadian Labour Congress President Hassan Yussuff will be mobilizing support at two Lower Mainland town hall meetings-February 20 in Surrey and February 21 in Vancouver.

Opportunities for Members: AGM Ombudspersons

The BCTF is looking for four members to serve as the Annual General Meeting ombudspersons for the upcoming March AGM. The Ombudspersons work together as a resource to help in the resolution of any member-to-member complaints during the meeting and assist any members who may feel they have been harassed. The deadline to apply is Monday, January 22, 2018. More information and an application form can be found online.
