World Teachers’ Day to be celebrated at the Legislature

tTomorrow, October 5, 2017, is World Teachers' Day. BCTF President Glen Hansman will be in Victoria at the Legislature to celebrate with Premier John Horgan and the Education Minister Rob Fleming. The government will be officially proclaiming the day and will welcome several teachers, adult education students, and a local school choir to help celebrate. This will be the first time in many years that such an event has been held to recognize and celebrate teachers here in British Columbia. Join in on the celebration online by following #WorldTeachersDay and #WTD2017 on Twitter. Thank you, BC teachers, for all you to do to support your students, schools, and communities!

BCTF presents 2017 funding brief to Legislative committee

BCTF President Glen Hansman presented the Federation's 2017 Education Funding Brief to the Legislative Assembly's Select Standing Committee on Finance and Government Services today, October 4, 2017. The committee is made up of MLAs from all parties and makes recommendations to the government on setting priorities for the provincial budget. In this year's brief, the Federation focused on the need to provide funding for the implementation of the revised curriculum, new teaching resources for classrooms, more supports for inclusion, and a robust recruitment and retention strategy. Read the brief to see all the BCTF's recommendations.

Voting starts today for Vancouver’s school board by-election

Vancouver teachers and parents have been waiting a long time to have a democratically elected board returned to their community. Vancouver has been without school trustees for a full year. Both of our locals in Vancouver, the Vancouver Elementary School Teachers' Association (VESTA) and the Vancouver Secondary Teachers' Association (VSTA), have endorsed candidates. Review VESTA's list and VSTA's list and contact the locals if you have any questions.

Teachers who live in Vancouver, no matter where they teach, are strongly encouraged to get out and vote. Advanced voting is open October 4 and 10. Election day is October 14. Learn more about voting procedures from the city's website
